Submissions for the 2012 SMFF are now open!

The Santa Monica Film Festival is focused on new filmmakers. We accept films in every genre, on any topic from every country around the world. Our mission is to help launch the careers of new filmmakers.

Submissions

The Santa Monica Film Festival only accepts submissions via Withoutabox. Please click on the icon below to proceed with this method.

Please note that the ONLY difference in the early submission deadline versus the final submission deadline is the fee discount. The submission process and consideration by the Programming Committee is not affected by the date you submit your film as long as it is postmarked by our final deadline - your chances are equal regardless of the day your film makes it into our offices, as long as it is postmarked by the final deadline!

We encourage filmmakers to submit their work as early as possible.

SMFF 2012 films will be selected by the festival programmers.

ALL films submitted to the festival are seen and scored by two different programmers. All films that have a higher average, or are a favorite of a programmer, go on to final deliberations. Film Submissions are non-returnable. Please do not send original materials. If a film is accepted, entrants will be solely responsible for delivering their exhibition film materials to and from the festival venue. Complete press kits will be needed as soon after notification as possible. SMFF cannot be held liable for your exhibition print/video materials which are lost or damaged. If your film wins either a Grand Jury or Audience award, you are required to mention that fact in posters and other promotional material if and when the film gets distribution. Please note festival dates are subject to change. SMFF does provide room, board or travel for filmmakers when possible.

YouTube - Audience Choice Awards

Entrants that provide uploadable version (.mov file) of film may be included in the Audience Choice Awards and featured on the Santa Monica Film Festival YouTube Channel. The filmmakers will gain exposure as the public will vote and decide the winners of the all important Audience Choice Awards. Include with your submission a seperate DVD with the (.mov file). Entrants must have all legal rights to have their submission video posted for public viewing on YouTube to be included in the on-line portion of the festival. FAQ: Santa Monica Film Festival YouTube Channel has the ability to upload videos longer than 15 minutes. (See YouTube for specs on best formats and resolutions for uploading videos.)
